Nut House Enterprise is my family’s
business that my grandfather created 50 years ago. The business started in the
back of a pick up truck along the side of the road in Cordele, GA and has now
grown to wholesale outlets along the interstates through out Florida and
Georgia. My mother and father own and run four of the businesses now and plan
on expanding more through out the near future. Two of their stores are here in
St. Augustine, located at 9980 US1 South and 9995 US1 South.
We
rely heavily on travelers but also have established a large local customer
basis. However, social media will only take our business to the next level. We
have a website now for our company, where customers can purchase items ranging
from a variety of pecans, southern homemade candies, jellies, syrups, BBQ
sauces, relishes, hot sauces, and more. But our family business still needs
more of a social media presence.
With
everything that I am learning from our social media class, and from the rest of
my communication major, I have taken on the task and challenge of getting us
out there in the social media world. I want to make a Facebook Fan Page,
Twitter Page, as well as putting us on Yelp and Foursquare. It think with all
of the social media platforms our already successful family business can be
taken to the next level!
Mango Mango’s is family owned and
operated by the Worley family. Robert Worley has been in the restaurant
business for over 37 years, and had dreams of owning his own successful
restaurant. In June of 2004, Mango Mango’s was open and ready for business.
They offer a unique Caribbean Southwest style of food. They are located at
700 A1A Beach Blvd. here in St. Augustine, FL and there is no other place
like it.
With involving Robert’s wife Gloria,
along with their two children Trevor and Natalie, they have taken there family
business to the next level. They truly used social media to their advantage to
make their restaurant more profitable. Mango Mango’s website is beautifully
laid out for the consumer and has all the information about their family and
history of creating Mango Mango’s. They also linked their Facebook Fan
Page, Twitter account, and email to their website.
Their Facebook
Fan Page allows consumers to see daily specials and friendly posts that
encourage customer responses. On their twitter page they offer for example,
free chips and salsa when you purchase an entrée. Aspects like that will keep
customers coming back to Mango Mango’s. They are also on Yelp and Foursquare
allowing customers to provide feedback about the restaurant allowing potential
customers to see how the restaurant is. I feel like Mango Mango’s is using
social media correctly and to its fullest potential. They have awesome food, so
check it out!
The Closet is a local boutique that
is almost five years old. They are a relatively new local business here in St.
Augustine, FL. It is located at 51 Cordova St. The Closet is open Monday
through Thursday 11:00am to 7:00pm, Friday and Saturday 12:00pm to 8:00pm, and
Sunday 12:00pm to 5:00pm. They offer a variety of local and independent
designers clothes and accessories as well as select vintage and consignment
clothing.
With
being a relatively new business, social media is a must! The Closet does have a
Facebook Fan Page that allows consumers to tag themselves when they are
shopping in the store. The Closet uses their Facebook Fan Page to post special
events hat they support, so the public will be made known about them, and they
also post about new hot items being in their stores. One aspect I like about
their fan page is that they talk about some of the designers they purchase
from. They also have a yelp page, which is great for consumers to provide
sufficient feedback about the clothing boutique for other potential customers
to see.
They are on the
correct path for being social media savvy, but I do feel they need a Twitter
account. I also feel they need to provide their online fans with weekly or
monthly specials which will essentially promote a social media a buzz about
their local boutique which cause more sales and a repeat customer basis.
O’Steen’s
Restaurant is a family restaurant that is most well known for having the best
friend shrimp in St. Augustine, FL. They are located at 205 Anastasia Blvd.
right near the historic Lions Bridge. O’Steens is a small restaurant that does
things, I guess you could say, the old fashion way. They are open Tuesday to
Saturday from 11:00am- 9:00om, only take cash, and do not serve alcohol. They
do offer an ATM machine incase customers do not have cash on hand.
Although they run
on an old fashion shift, they have made the plunge into the social media world.
O’Steens has a Facebook Fan Page where people can check-in to their restaurant
if they are there eating. The site also provides information about the family
owned restaurant. They are on Yelp and Foursquare, which are outstanding sites
to get consumer feedback about local businesses. O’Steens also has a website
wear consumers can purchase O’Steens t-shirts, however it is not a full site
about O’Steens.
One aspect of
O’steens that I truly thought was a fun way to give insight to the consumers
was when I found a video of O’steens making their famous fried shrimp.
O’Steens has made
the plunge into social media; however, if they dig deeper I feel they will be
even more profitable. I think they need to make a full website for their
business and add a Twitter account as well. For a local restaurant they do good
business, but just a little but more social media buzz and their local business
could really start to boom!
Social media is an essential platform for
local businesses around the St. Augustine community. I feel a special bond to this
issue due to my family having local family owned businesses.
Schmagel's Bagels is a locally family
owned and operated business for 20 years and counting. They are located at the
corner of Hypolita Street. They offer a variety of different breakfast items
and lunch specials, but are known for their New York style bagels and their
very own varieties of homemade cream cheese. One of their main pushes for their
business is that everything they make is always fresh and never frozen. They
have a Facebook page that I have become friends with as well as a Facebook Fan
Page. They are also available on Twitter.
Schmagel's Bagels' social media sites provide their consumers with daily specials, pictures of
homemade baked goods, history of their family business, promotional deals, as
well as promote local shows and activities that will take place at their
business. With extending their business to the social media world, Schmagel's
Bagels can gain consumer loyalty, gain potential customers with engaging
promotions, as well as out stand the existing businesses are not jumping on the
social media bandwagon.
